Here are the key highlights that make Budget-2025 a bonanza for the middle class.
1. Revised Income Tax Slabs: A Game Changer:
One of the most significant announcements in Budget-2025 is the restructuring of income tax slabs under the new tax regime. Basic Exemption Limit under the New Tax Regime has been enhanced from Rs. 3,00,000/- to Rs. 4,00,000/-. The revised slabs are as follows:
This restructuring is a substantial shift from the previous slabs under the Finance (No. 2) Act, 2024, offering significant tax savings across income brackets.
Note: There are no changes in the basic tax exemption limit, tax slabs, and tax rates under the Old Tax Regime.
2. Enhanced Rebate Limit: NIL Tax up to Rs. 12 Lakh:
A groundbreaking move in the budget is the extension of the rebate limit, ensuring NIL tax liability for resident individuals with an annual income of up to Rs. 12 lakhs. The tax rebate under the new tax regime has been increased from Rs. 25,000/- to Rs. 60,000/-, providing substantial relief to taxpayers.
Important: Tax rebate under Section 87A will not be applicable to income chargeable at special rates, such as capital gains under Sections 111A, 112, and 112A.
4. Marginal Relief for High Earners:
The budget introduces marginal relief for resident individuals earning slightly above Rs. 12 lakh. This ensures that the tax payable does not exceed the income surpassing the threshold of Rs 12,00,000/-. For instance, a person earning Rs. 12.10 lakh will pay only Rs. 10,000 in taxes, instead of Rs. 61,500 without marginal relief.
5. Wider Taxpayer Benefits:
The government estimates that these changes will leave an additional Rs. 1 lakh crore in the hands of taxpayers, boosting consumption and economic growth.
Conclusion:
Budget-2025 is undoubtedly a 'big bonanza' for the middle class. By significantly increasing the basic exemption limit, tax rebate limit and revising tax slabs and introducing marginal relief, the government has taken a bold step towards tax simplification and economic empowerment. These measures are set to provide substantial financial relief, encourage higher disposable incomes, and stimulate economic activity, making Budget-2025 a landmark for the Indian middle class.
